When you first walk onto the mats at our Highland Village academy, it can feel like everyone is speaking a completely different language. You hear words like guard, mount, and shrimp thrown around as if they are common knowledge, and it is natural to feel a bit lost. The truth is that all this vocabulary is just a shorthand for specific ways to move your body or control a position. Once you start picking up these terms, you will find that it is actually much easier to understand what the instructor is asking you to do, and you will stop feeling like you are playing catch up during every demonstration.

The guard is the position you will hear about more than any other. It is basically the situation where you are on your back with your legs wrapped around your partner. A lot of people see being on their back as a bad spot, but in our art, the guard is a powerful defensive tool. It gives you a way to keep your opponent at a distance and use your legs to sweep them over or set up a submission. Learning to feel comfortable in the guard is the first real shift in perspective for a new student.

 

Then you have the mount, which is just as simple as it sounds. It is the position where one person is sitting on top of the other person’s chest. From the top, it is a dominant spot because you have gravity and leverage on your side, but for the person on the bottom, it is a high pressure situation. We spend a lot of time teaching you how to escape from the bottom of the mount safely. It is all about using your hips and creating frames with your arms to make just enough room to get your legs back into the mix.

 

Side control is another position you will encounter within your first few classes. It happens when you are pinned on your back and your partner is pressing their weight across your chest from the side. It is notoriously difficult because they can use their shoulder to drive pressure into your neck, which is exactly why it is such a great position to study. Learning how to move your hips and regain your guard from side control is a rite of passage for every beginner. It teaches you how to stay calm when you feel squashed.

 

You are going to hear the word shrimp quite a bit, and it is not about the seafood. It is the fundamental movement of jiu jitsu, named because it looks like a shrimp curling its tail. You lie on your back, lift your hips, and move them to the side while pushing off your feet. This is how you escape pins, create space, and get back into a good position. If you can master the shrimp, you are already halfway to being a competent grappler, so do not be surprised when you are asked to do it fifty times in a warm up.

 

A submission is simply the catch all term for the moves that end a match. This could be a choke, which applies pressure to the neck, or a joint lock, which attacks an elbow or a shoulder. We always emphasize that a submission is not about pain or hurting your partner. It is about applying enough control that they have to concede the position. We call this a tap, where you press your hand against your partner or the mat to signal that you are done. It is the most important word in our vocabulary because it keeps everyone safe and respectful.

 

When we talk about frames, we are referring to the way you use your arms and legs to create structural integrity. If you just lay flat against your partner, you are easily pinned. But if you put your forearm against their hip or your shin against their chest, you create a stiff, bone on bone structure that is much harder for them to collapse. Thinking about your arms as support beams rather than just grabbers is a huge step in your understanding of the game. It allows you to hold your own against someone much larger than you.

 

Posture is another word that carries a lot of weight in our academy. In daily life, we think of posture as just sitting up straight, but on the mat, it is your survival. If your posture is broken, meaning your head is down or your back is slumped, you are vulnerable to chokes and sweeps. Keeping your spine straight and your weight centered is how you stay powerful. A good rule of thumb is that if you have good posture, you are winning the battle for control, no matter what position you are currently in.

 

The gi is the traditional uniform we wear, those heavy cotton pajamas you see everyone sporting. It is a big part of the curriculum because the material gives you a whole new set of handles and grips to work with. You can pull on a lapel to break someone’s balance or use the sleeve to control an arm. Learning to use the cloth to your advantage is what makes this art so complex and deep. It is a tool that adds a whole layer of strategy to everything you do, and it is something that takes years to truly master.

 

You do not need to memorize all of this by tomorrow morning. We are going to use these words every single class, and you will pick them up through repetition and practice. It is just like learning a new sport or a new hobby, where the jargon starts to feel natural after a while.
